Parking Requirements

When we get in our car to go somewhere, we all want a convenient place to park. What do we give up to have all this parking? A great video from Mobility Lab provides some insight.

The city of Brainerd should not require private property owners to subsidize parking. The city of Brainerd should not stifle investment by mandating parking. The city of Brainerd should not use taxpayer money to provide free public parking or even paid parking at a loss. This is a clear area where the market will make better decisions than some formula in a code book at city hall.

There are thousands of people who live within easy walking distance of downtown Brainerd. Getting them downtown without a car is cheap if we are of the mindset to do it. And making it easy and convenient to walk and bike downtown will not only help businesses, it will improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods and make those properties more valuable as well.

The city has taken steps to reduce parking requirements. I would eliminate them completely for all the reasons expressed in this video.
